From a Dream to a Thriving Pharmacy

In Bal’ad town, Middle Shabelle region, Fuad Ibrahim Adan had long harboured a dream: to open his own pharmacy and provide quality healthcare products to his community. But like many aspiring entrepreneurs in Somalia, access to capital stood in his way.

“I didn’t have the money to even think seriously about starting,” Fuad says. “But then a friend told me about MicroDahab MFI.”
MicroDahab MFI, which supports small and medium-sized enterprises in Somalia under the FIG-Somalia programme, gave Fuad a $3,000 startup loan. This was a lifeline that changed Fuad’s hustle and inspired him to pursue his dream.

“I started this pharmacy from scratch with that loan,” Fuad says. “I bought shelves, stocked essential medicine, and opened my doors to the public.” His determination, patience, and sound business instincts paid off.

Today, Fuad’s pharmacy is thriving so much so that he can no longer manage it on his own. “I’ve employed my brother to help me run the business,” he says. “This has created not just a job for me, but also for him.”

Fuad now shares what he’s learned with others. He encourages young people to take advantage of MicroDahab MFI’s flexible loan programs and offers informal training to those interested in starting small businesses.

“The process was straightforward,” he says. “MicroDahab MFI trusted me, and I made sure every cent was used wisely. I signed a one-and-a-half-year repayment agreement, and I’ve kept my end of the deal.”

For Fuad, MicroDahab MFI is filling a vital gap. “They’re doing what government should be doing supporting people who want to work and grow.”

“If you’re serious and responsible, this is your chance,” Fuad says. “Don’t wait. Build something.”
